Chairman's Message
Good Afternoon to you all,
I hope that this reaches you all in good health, and that many of you have had the first Covid jab which will mean the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched back on. Unfortunately I have to begin this month with some very sad news. One of our members, Richard Robbins has passed away, in rather sad circumstances. Richard had been struggling during Covid, and as a result had decided not to renew his membership with our club, and apparently this was also the case with the Rover club he belonged to. The sad information I am privvy to is that he died at home, I believe due to a heart attack, but not definite about this, and that he was only found after neighbours were concerned that his mother, who suffers from dementia, was seen wandering the streets. We are not aware of any other family details, but am sure all your thoughts will go out to him and any family members. If anybody has any further information, then please let me know. I have also had an email from another member, Chris Stringer, to whom this pandemic has hit hard financially, and as a consequence has had to sell , as he puts it, "his beloved Rover 10" , so will not be renewing his membership. Chris has pointed out his short membership has been very enjoyable and informative, and praised our members for their support. He will be returning, when circumstances allow. I'm sure we will welcome him back when he chooses to do so, and I thank all the members who made the effort to help him out. We are all aware that we are now heading towards more certain times, with the Covid jab obviously making a difference at the moment, which will hopefully continue in the right direction. We are far from being out of the woods at the moment, but confidence is building that we will be able to attend events in the not too distant future. In lieu of the above, please ensure that you are still keeping yourselves safe, and ensure you are keeping in touch with each other, if just to keep your sanity. You may or may not know that the NEC Restoration Show has now been officially cancelled, just after we had re-arranged the concours, as these two events clashed. The concours is now on the 20th June, and hopefully we will be able to keep this date, Covid rules allowing. Please read the FBHVC newsletters, as they do inform us of changes that will affect us, the latest being the introduction of E10 fuel, and recently the use of LED headlights on classic cars. Now to car things, I, as usual, have been busy with my increasing fleet. The Range Rover passed its MOT a few weeks ago, needing nothing more than new tyres, a full set, which if you say it quickly doesn't sound too expensive. I bought a Saab 9-3 convertible just before Christmas, which although being a solid car, has some issues. It leaked and was very damp inside, had ABS and airbag warning lights and was clunking on the rear end over potholes etc. I pulled the wet carpets and most of the interior out, to get it dry, and have managed to sort the leaking out as the roof and door seals were not doing their job properly. I plumped them up by feeding various lengths and diameters of rubber pipe through their hole profiles, and this now has cured the main problem, and spent 3 days cleaning and reproofing the roof. The airbag issue has now gone away, it was down to a seat fault, but must have been a bad connection as re-installing the interior has cured it. I am now awaiting the rear suspension bushes to arrive so I can tackle the clunking, and at the same time l can investigate the ABS fault which has been narrowed down to the rear offside sensor. So by the end of the weekend I will have a dry, fault free Saab, MOT'd until August for a total cost of £900 including buying it and all the bits to put it right. Roll on the sunshine so I can get the lid off. The Cortina has also moved on, it now has the suspension fitted, all except rear shock absorbers, still deciding what to go for, and the engine is at Bromsgrove engines to be assessed to see what that will cost me. The gearbox has been inspected, but as it was rebuilt 12 months before the car was taken off the road, nothing untoward was found, but I have ordered front and rear oil seals as these had hardened. A coat of paint is all it required and will be ready to fit. No work on the Jensen, and it still needs a good wash, but I need to ensure it is OK as I am off to the LeMans Classic in it in July with the Jensen club, hopefully getting back into the continental trips again. Please keep us informed of what you have been doing by sending piccies to Chris Read for the website. For those that are interested, at the moment I am back on furlough, until next week, when I will be working on the All England Badminton championships, which start on the 15th March, for a week. After this, probably back on furlough again, but who knows. Ironically the Badminton was the last event I worked on last year before lock down, and is the first event, hopefully of many, this year. Please don't forget to renew your membership, £10 for this year, before the end of March. I'm sorry it has been such a long ramble this month, but may be a sign that things will start to pick up. Please keep safe and let us know if the club may be able to help you. Kev Birch Chairman NEW
